I am going to write about my favorite albums of 2011 because I am a professional writer and my opinion is highly lauded in the music industry. Really though, I’m terrible at organizing my memories by year (what is 1998?) and these things help. Also, I have like two internet stalkers with terrible taste in music and I’m trying to help them out here. Happy New Year!
The Dø - Both Ways Open Jaws My most favorite band of all time. Hands down. I have so many beautiful memories and so many terrible memories associated with every song of theirs. Forever enchanted by these two. I saw them at Bootleg this year, which is essentially a little room a couple miles down the street from my house. It is such an unusual experience to stand there and watch some chick spew out the same words I’ve been listening to for years on end. Also: Scandinavian. French. Hi. Hello.
Adele - 21 This bitch is on everybody’s aunt’s year-end list. I don’t know, probably because she’s INCREDIBLE?! There was this one Friday when April came home from work on the verge of tears. I put on the Jamie xx remix of Rolling in the Deep and MADE her dance in the kitchen with me. Suddenly we are dancing through song after song of this album. Oh, so what, the freezer door flew open and we both tripped and fell into a couple shot glasses of vodka? I don’t even know, you guys.
Bon Iver - S/T I wish he would stop producing such beautiful music so I can legitimately start loathing him already. But I can’t. I just can’t. Minnesota, WI stop it! Get out of my head! I know we’re secret lovers and all, but you really need to get the hell out of my memories, Justin.
Ellie Goulding - Lights Ugh this album is STILL in regular rotation in my car. I have zero issues with LA traffic because every other drive of mine begins with Salt Skin.
Feist - Metals I want to live in this album. It is my dream winter home.
Fleet Foxes - S/T Whoopsie, was this released a million years ago? I rediscovered it a few months ago. This album was my autumntime home.
The Fling - When The Madhouses Appear I drove home from SXSW with The Fling. Graham gave me their album at some point. Don’t you hate it when you get to know someone and they hand you their work and it is awkwardly terrible? Well thankfully this situation was absolutely nothing like that. What a beautiful album, from head to toe.
Florence and The Machine - Ceremonials You guys, I listen to this album while going on long walks through the neighborhood, down into the underground metro, up underneath the downtown skyscrapers, and ALL MY THOUGHTS ARE IN CAPS LOCK and I feel so god damn powerful that I forget to keep a hand on my pepper spray.
Friendly Fires - Pala Yes.
Holy Ghost! - S/T "Hey what’s that band you and Leish always listen to? They’re like indie but like dancey?” - Our 25 year-old room mate Jenna. “WHAT IS THIS? IS THIS EVEN MUSIC?” - Our 35 year-old room mate Gordon, on a different day, around 3am. Nobody understands us, Leish.
Jay-Z and Kanye - Watch The Throne Offfff cooouuuuurrrrssseeeeee. Like I would leave my soul sister Kanye out of anything. I spent a month on tour with Hana and we started basically every drive with this album. Sometimes we’d get to our destination early and just sit in the parking lot so we can continue listening to these JAMZZZ.
Katy B - Katy On A Mission I know this album was released like four thousand years ago but I don’t live in London so give me a break. This was our “getting ready” album this year (such females). Leisha and I saw her at Bardot just a few months ago. I think it was her first American performance? Can you imagine? Like, I can’t… even… I just can’t.
The Limousines - Get Sharp Technically the Dangerbird release was this year, eh? This album is constantly rotating through my car stereo. Just like my heart and soul, shit gets darker with every track (yet I find myself dancing along). Love love love. So very proud of these two.
Oh Land - S/T Scandinavian! I don’t need to say much more.
Phantogram - Eyelid Movies A late discovery on my part. This album, from beginning to end, got me through a run on the treadmill at the 24hr Fitness in Koreatown. It was over before it started. NOTHING has ever gotten me through a treadmill run like that. Also, nothing will ever get me to pay a second visit to the 24hr Fitness in Koreatown.
SBTRKT - S/T Summertiiiiiiiiiime! Hotel pool parties. What time is it? Let’s get brek.
The Weeknd - House of Balloons / Thursday Are you kidding me. What is it about this guy that makes me want to be inside every single song. At 5am. On god knows what. With god knows who. I hate you. I love you. I hate you.
